It was the coldest winter of the century / the winter of the century with the greatest amount of snowfall"
once-in-a-hundred-years event [insur.] --- das Jahrhundertereignis hundred year flood [meteo.] --- das Jahrhunderthochwasser centennial loss [insur.] --- der Jahrhundertschaden http://dict.leo.org/ende?lp=ende&lang=de...dert*&relink=on
When I have heard the term hundred year flood or hundred year storm it has meant that it is the type of event that happens once in a hundred year span. I have heard it many times on the news. Or I have read where peoples houses in the mid-west are in 100 year flood planes. This means that the possibility of being flooded out could occur if one of these 100 year storms occurs. A hundred year storm is not inconceivable but is a very very rare event indeed.
